Ben-Gigi, Shimon (Simon)

Shimon, son of Aliza and David Son of-Gigi, was born on 29.11.1961 in Morocco, and was two years old when he immigrated with his parents to Israel. In February 1980 Shimon joined the IDF and served in an infantry regiment, after completing basic training, during which he underwent three advanced levels on kashrut, serving as a kashrut supervisor in the kitchen of his unit. On the 25th of Cheshvan 5742 (22.11.1981), while on vacation, Shimon and his friend went out to fish on the platform of Ashdod, both standing on a concrete platform at the pier, and suddenly a part of the platform collapsed and Shimon fell to the stormy sea. He was carried away by the waves of the sea. His body was not found until December 7, 1981. Shimon was laid to rest in the Ashdod military cemetery, and was promoted to corporal after his death. He was 20 years old when he died. He left behind his parents, five sisters and two brothers.
