Ben-David, Avshalom (Avishai)


Avshalom Son of-David, son of Ahuva and David, was born on December 5, 1917 in Zinkov, Ukraine. His family immigrated to Israel in 1920.He was a momber of the Haganah and after the outbreak of World War II, he was one of the first volunteers of the Yishuv in the British army. He enlisted in the Artillery Corps, an anti-aircraft unit. He then made efforts to move to a combat unit on the European front but failed to do so. He was transferred to Persia and assigned to a transport unit that first served in Persia and then in Iraq. Due to the harsh conditions of service, the environment and the climate he was not used to, he fell ill and was hospitalized in a military hospital. When he recovered, he received a homecoming leave and returned to Israel. After returning from his vacation, he returned to his unit and fell ill again, and despite the efforts of the doctors to save him, he died on March 3, 1946. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Netanya. He left behind his mother and three brothers.
