Ben-Bassat, Yehuda


Son of Oscar and Rachel. He was born on June 19, 1938, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in spite of all the hardships Bulgaria had in being under the yoke of the Nazis and when his father was in a labor camp, the parents tried to save their son. He studied until his fourth year, but he immigrated to Israel in 1949. His parents decided to immigrate to Israel in 1949 after the establishment of the State of Israel, In his elementary studies, which stopped in Bulgaria upon his arrival in Israel, he did as much as he could After completing his studies in elementary school, he was accepted as a student at the naval officers ‘school in Acre and after four years of studies there he was drafted into the navy, which was in October 1957. He completed his officers’ course and then completed his course Then began to serve as a deputy machine officer on the destroyer “Eilat.” Then he moved to the “Jaffa” JAFI as a machine officer for a short period of time; At the same time a wife took him. After that, he moved to Haifa, where he received his training as chief machine officer After serving two and a half years in Haifa, he returned to the Israel Defense Forces, where he also served as chief machine officer. Yehuda reached the rank of major and was loved by his subordinates and commanders as he was devoted to his parents and family. He was modest and humble and never wanted to stand out. He aspired to continue his studies at the Hebrew Technion in Haifa, but because of his dedication to and love for ships and the Israel Defense Forces, Hewas on the ship that was hit by an Egyptian missile destroyer and with it, Judah descended into the depths of the sea. This was on the 18th of Tishrei, 5728 (October 21, 1967) opposite a Romanian beach in northern Sinai. He left a wife and a son. Since his body was not found, a monument was placed in his memory for the missing persons in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He was later assigned a gravestone in the military cemetery in Haifa.
