Becker, Avraham
Son of Aidel and Yehoshua, was born in 1914 in Bessarabia. He was the born to a poor family and they placed all their hopes on his success. Avraham acquired a high school education and specialized in photography. He immigrated to Israel in 1933 and began to work in building materials.
During the 1936-1939 riots, he volunteered for the Haganah, and this became his life. With the outbreak of the War of Independence Avraham was again assigned combat roles in the framework of the “Kiryati” Brigade. He defended a section of the southern Tel Aviv front, participated in explosions in Manshiyya. After the conquest of Jaffa Avraham was appointed platoon commander and moved to the Latrun front during Operation Danny where his troops took over. Avraham’s forces were in the Modi’in area when the second truce came into force. The truce was enforced by a unit of the Kiryati Brigade. The area was calm but on September 24, 1948, local Arabs attacked the outpost unexpectedly, with the help of the Legion, in violation
of the truce. The defenders of the outpost were surprised and many were injured in the forced retreat. The next day, the IDF forces retaliated and conquered the outpost. Avraham was killed in the battle on the 20th of Elul 5708
(24.9.1948), and was laid to rest at the Nachlat Yitzchak military cemetery. He left behind his wife Ruth, and four orphaned children. His last child was born after his death and is named after his father Avraham.
After his passing, he was promoted to lieutenant.
