Basus, Aaron

Basus, Aaron

Son of Simcha and Yechezkel, was born in 1916 in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Aharon acquired a popular education, specialized in mechanics, worked in commerce, and all his life he aspired to Israel. In 1942 he joined the British army in Egypt in order to be released in Palestine. He served for five years, but at the time of his release they wanted to release him in Egypt. Aaron fought firmly for the promise he had been given, and did not even say goodbye to his mother, who had remained in Egypt so as not to make it easier for his superiors to retract the commitment. He was finally discharged from the British army in 1947 and settled in Jerusalem. Prior to the publication of the draft, he spent several weeks on Mount Scopus, fought against the British in the Allenby camp and in Ma’aleh Hahamisha, and dealt with the transfer of Haganah weapons from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In September 1948, he joined the Israel Defense Forces and joined a combat battalion in the Jerusalem Brigade. He fought at Mount Zion, and in Deir Abu Tur, where sniper fire fell on the 20th of Tishrei, October 20, 1948. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. He left a wife, Miriam. On the 17th of Elul 5706 (August 30, 1950), he was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
