Bass, David

Son of Zelda and Yaakov, was born in 1927 in the Ukraine. Before World War II broke out, the Second World War broke out. He fled from his place of residence in order not to fall into the hands of the Nazis. He wandered from place to place until he managed to connect with a group of partisans in the Polesie Forest, around Pinsk, and carried out several sabotage operations together with his comrades. At the end of the war he lived in Raffalowka (Volhynia). In 1944 he joined a reconnaissance company aimed at tailoring the Nazi gangs who had been hiding in the thick forests and the Ukrainian organizations, the German dragons. In these operations, almost all of his company was killed and David survived miraculously. In the same year he approached the Zionist movement and the following year he organized a group of immigrants in Lublin who crossed the border and reached Romania, and from there to Italy. On the Italian coast, he dealt in arms shipments for the Haganah in Israel. In 1946 David arrived in Israel, was accepted to Kibbutz Ginosar, worked in the kibbutz and was active in the Haganah. He was one of the first members to join the Palmach, and on theh 19th of Tevet, January 19, 1948 he went with a reconnaissance squad to the Wadi Amud in the fields of Ginosar, where the squad was ambushed by gangs. David was seriously injured and died in the Shweitzer Hospital in Tiberias , During the operation, and was brought to rest in the Ginosar cemetery.
