Baruch, Yaakov


Yaakov, son of Margalit and Nissim Baruch, was born in 1923, in Istanbul, Turkey. When he was 20, he immigrated to Israel and worked in the British naval camp in Mansoura, and later on in various construction work. He was a member of the Histadrut, a good athlete, a soccer player and one of the founders of Hapoel-Dror in Haifa. He took care of every member of his society and tried to help his friends as best he could. His ambition to bring his parents from Turkey to Israel was realized at the end of World War II. Before the invasion of the Arab armies, he joined the ranks of the Haganah forces in the Carmeli Brigade and took part in guarding the Wadi Rushmia and Carmel Forests. After the liberation of Haifa he was sent to the Galilee and participated in battles in Safed and the surrounding area. Yaakov fell on the ninth day of Tammuz (16.7.1948), the day before the declaration of the second truce, in battles in Mishmar Hayarden, with his hands holding his machine gun. Yaakov was brought to rest In the military cemetery in Rosh Pina. He left behind his wife.
