Barry (Bershvili), Shalom (Shalva)


Son of Shimon and Tamara. He was born on February 15, 1959. He completed seven years of elementary school in his home town of Tbilisi, and in January 1972 his family immigrated to Israel and settled in Haifa, where Shalom graduated from the municipal school He completed his high school studies at the “Hugim” school in the real world with the intention of continuing to study at the Technion in the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Technion, and was drafted into the IDF in early February 1977 and volunteered to serve in the combat force. He was posted to Golani. After completing basic training he was sent to various courses, a wireless course and a squadron commander’s course, which he graduated with honors and was awarded the rank of corporal, who was a good soldier, disciplined and responsible. The course recommended that his commanders send him to an officers’ course, recognizing their ability and chances of being a commander in the IDF. His friends loved him and asked for his girlfriend because he had a good temper and was always willing to help others. On 15 March 1978, a peace battle took place in the south of Lebanon. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. Survived by his parents, brother and sister. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, then-Minister of Defense Ezer Weizman wrote: “… a corporal of peace gave his life for his homeland … He served in the infantry commander’s school and was an excellent soldier, Everyone who knew him. In his letter of condolences to the family, Shalom’s commander wrote: “… Shalom fought with his friends about one of the terrorist strongholds in the Bint Jbail area. He went into battle knowing that we were fighting so that the citizens of our country would not serve as targets for murderers. Shalom was hurt when he led his soldiers to clear the target. He was accepted in his unit for his integrity and his willingness to always help his friends … “
