Barab (Rabinowitz), Moshe


Moshe, son of Levi and Sarah (Rabinowitz) Barab, was born on April 14, 1910 in Berdichev, Russia. He was a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov and Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev. The family immigrated to Israel in 1920. Moshe was a member of the Haganah from his youth and became a commander. In 1942 he volunteered for the British army, where he received a high-level course in electrical engineering and efficiency engineering. During his time in North Africa, Moshe was active in smuggling arms to Israel and while in Italy he was involved in bringing Jews to Israel. At the beginning of 1946 he was released from the British army and in November 1947 he joined the Israeli army and was in charge of receiving arms at the port of Tel Aviv. From May 1948, Moshe served as an officer in the Ordnance Corps HQ. Two weeks before he was killed, he was promoted to the rank of major. Moshe was wounded in the course of his duty and nine days later, on the 7th of Nissan, March 25, 1950, he died of his wounds and was laid to rest at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
