Bar-Or, Zion

Son of Sarah and Asher. He was born on 29.6.1950 in Zichron Ya’akov, the brother of Reuven and Orna. Four years later his family joined Kibbutz Kfar Glickson. Zion attended elementary school in Alonei Yitzhak and continued his studies at the regional high school at Kibbutz Givat Haim Ihud. At the end of October 1969, Zion enlisted in the IDF and volunteered for a pilots’ course, where he was assigned to a squadron of the Sa’ar transport and fought with her in the Yom Kippur War, during which he married Naomi and the two expanded their family on the birth of Assaf, Yael and Michal. He served as a pilot in the Flight School, and was part of the squadron of the Viper Squadron in the IDF, where he served as a squadron commander at the Flight School. Shalom-Hagalil When he finished his post, his commander wrote: “Zion is showing maturity in his behavior and character, expressed in his flight. He did his job in the best possible way and at a very good level. Noteworthy is the atmosphere he created at the school. “In his assessment of Zion’s flight level, he wrote:” A very good pilot, excellent candidate for command of an operational squadron. “On an officers’ assessment form he received an especially high grade: Which he did not have to make on his own, his ability to make intelligent decisions, and his openness to learn from experience and not to repeat mistakes that occurred in the past. , Trips and flights in the nave (Zion used to document most of his flights in photographs from the cockpit). He graduated with honors, and during his studies, Zion was able to take part as a combat soldier in a squadron of combat helicopters during the turbulent years following the Peace-Galilee War. That I had been privileged to do so, and within a short time I felt a sense of belonging to something wonderful and a privilege to belong to. A lot of things have changed since those wonderful years I spent as a young pilot in the squadron, but there are things that stay for good, and as the commander of the base said today, the squadron never leaves. On other things, and without referring to us specifically, wrote Natan Alterman: Aviation makes personal pleasure / fly is a pleasure! It is good to fly even a moment, but it is a sign that you have to know how to fly and it is a sign that flying is a nectar. And that’s a sign that you should keep your face / on any case that does not happen / fly! On the 17th of Adar 5737 (18.3.1987), Zion was killed in the course of his mission, and his death was caused by a severe technical malfunction that prevented him from taking over the helicopter despite his high level of professionalism as a pilot.Tzion was laid to rest in Beit- The military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul left behind Raya – Naomi, three children – Assaf, Yael and Michal, parents, brother – Reuven and sister – Orna. He and we were privileged to serve on two base squadrons, following a long and busy service in helicopter squadrons. He had a commander and a bad man. Zion will remind us of a rescue operation at the mall, a cliff in the Judean Desert, an operational incursion on the northern border, a windsurfing at Palmahim Beach, and a fighting exercise in enemy armor … Fine and meticulous in every detail, Zion managed to fill every moment of his life with an explosive,It is vibrant. We will continue on its way when its image and its performance before our eyes … “
