Bahbut, Joseph
Son of Alia and Eliyahu, born in 1905 in Jerusalem, grew up in the Old City. He married Ida and the couple had eight children. In 1946, Yosef enlisted in the ranks of the Haganah and went on guard duty in the areas of Givat Shaul and Kiryat Moshe in pre-war days. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Moshe was attached to the “People’s Guard” which was an arm of the Haganah forces in Jerusalem. As a truck driver, he participated in convoys to Gush Etzion, Hulda and Tel Aviv. On the 20th of Iyar, 5708 (May 20, 1948), Joseph was ordered to report with his truck in the engineering unit of the Etzioni Brigade to transport construction material from the Schneller camp to various locations in the city for the purpose of erecting fortifications. That day was later known as one of Jerusalem’s most difficult days during the War of Independence: the city was shelled by the Jordanian Legion from the early morning to the dark. In one of these shelling Joseph was injured and killed. He was buried in Sheik-Bader Bet. He left behind a wife and eight children, a brother and sisters. In 1951 he was laid to rest in the Givat Shaul cemetery in Jerusalem.
