Azzam, Hassan Said

Azzam, Hassan Said

Son of Hajla and Sayid. Born in 1918 in the village of Isfiya to an extended family. His father was one of the village leaders of the Druze community. Hassan Said attended elementary school in the village and worked in the family’s drink factory. During the bloody riots that opened in April 1936, the residents of Isfiya and Daliyat al-Carmel suffered from the hands of the Arab gangs. Hassan Said, his father and brothers organized with the rest of the village for self-defense. Afterwards, the family collaborated with the Haganah members in Yagur against the Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini gangs. The gangs declared a bounty on his head and on his brother’s head. On November 22, 1938, when he was on an intelligence mission of the Haganah from Isfiya Ligur, he fell. His burial place is unknown. He left parents and four brothers. He was later recognized as a soldier in Israel’s wars and a monument was erected in his memory in the military cemetery in Isfiya. In February 1976, the Public Council for the Commemoration of the Soldier decided to add his name to the memorial plaque commemorating fallen soldiers of the Druze community standing in the military cemetery in his village.
