Azulay, Michael (Mickey)

Son of-Pnina and Shalom was born on March 29, 1963 in Kiryat Motzkin, where he studied at the Korczak elementary school and continued his studies at the Haifa high school for refrigeration and air conditioning. When he was in ninth grade, he joined the Hashomer Hatzair movement in the Kiryat Haim branch and acquired many friends there. Mickey attended a course for instructors and became a guide. The youth movement found a suitable framework for recreation and trips, and through it he acquired his great love for the country. Kibbutz Baram, from which their guide, Nir, came was a second home to Mickey and his friends in the movement. When he enlisted in the IDF, he was asked to serve in a combat unit and was assigned to a combat engineering unit, and was offered an officers’ course, while the officers of the course took part in the battles in Lebanon. After being confined to bed for about three weeks, he returned to the officer’s course and finished it, and he was an officer for the pride of his entire family. Despite the age gap, Mickey was an acceptable and popular guide to everyone, and he could encourage and say a good word to each of them. “His shy smile and his willingness to carry out his duties professionally and with devotion and responsibility characterized and distinguished him from his friends.” This was what his commander described him. On the 28th of Tishrei 5744 (28.9.1983) Mickey fell during his service and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Haifa. He left behind his parents, sister and brother. His family set up a scholarship fund in his memory, which will be available to the students of the School of Practical Engineers and Technicians, established by the SMA in Haifa
