Azoulay, Uri

The son of Matilda and Moshe. He was born on the 24th of Cheshvan 5731 (23.11.1970) in Kiryat Shmona. A twin brother to Orly, to whom he was particularly attached. The birth of the twins spread a new light in the home of their parents, who only a year earlier had lost their young son, Yaakov, after an illness. Uri grew up, was educated and grew up in Kiryat Shmona. He began his studies at the “Magenim” elementary school and continued at Danziger High School in the city. As a member of a family of eleven, he learned to settle for the best of what he had, and stood out in his modesty. Uri worshiped his father and absorbed the values of love of the land and others, which he lived in his life and even impart to others. Uri was an active boy who spent nights and days strengthening the body and studying. He excelled in both fields and believed that the path to perfection combined body and soul. In the light athletics industry he was a long distance runner, participated in regional and national competitions and marathons. At the age of fourteen he discovered Rugby, the same stiff sport that required speed, power, and a fair amount of intelligence. Uri joined the Rugby team of the Upper Galilee and became one of its pillars. Until his conscription, he did not miss a practice or a game. Later, when there were no players and he was already a soldier, they called him from the ends of the country to complete the group’s lineup, and immediately afterwards he returned to his base. During vacations Uri worked with his father in the orchards of the experimental farms. The difficult physical work, which included the leaving of irrigation and picking pipes during the hot summer months, did not deter him, and he showed diligence, vigor and great strength. Despite his physical strength Uri was a sensitive person and loved to write, especially poetry. He had the ability to express his feelings and feelings in a poem simply, wisely, and even humorously. From his diary: “A man like him rock / dreams innumerable Lev wants to burst / and inside his Lev has already broken / And saw all the creatures / yes also rocks break. His father spoke of his sensitivity; when Uri came home for a vacation he would sit next to me and bow his head. My son, six meters tall, with the power of Aryeh, would sit down and let me stroke his hair. “In mid-October 1988, Uri enlisted in the IDF. At first he joined the pilots’ course, but as soon as he learned of his acceptance to Sayeret Matkal, he left the course and joined the unit, “to stay with his feet on the ground.” Uri of that period turned from a cheerful and mischievous boy into a withdrawn fellow who does not like to talk about his military service and does not volunteer details about his activities. His friends said that even in this elite unit, he stood out for his power, his cleverness and his determination to perform any mission, and even the most difficult. Before completing his regular service, he was sent to the officers’ course and returned to the unit as a team commander. At the same time the Gaza Strip began to swell. Uri, who understood that the main activity was taking place in the Gaza Strip, and despite his love for Sayeret Matkal and its people, decided to leave the unit and join the Samson unit as a company commander, saying: “I want to serve where I really need me.” “I realized that someone was sitting in front of someone from an unusual caliber – a legend in his life …” In one of the newspaper interviews held in connection with the operations of the undercover unit, Uri said: “I know that I am liable to die and I am ready for it.” In another interview, We are professionals, we are not soldiers who are afraid of throwing rocks and harming a child or a boy who throws a stone. We know how to penetrate between these without harming them and taking out the terrorist among them. “Uri was a partner in many operations in the Gaza Strip and succeeded with his team and his unit to put their hands on them On many wanted persons and terrorists, and after the evacuation from Gaza, the undercover unit broke downRee, whose name preceded him as an outstanding officer and was admired at the highest echelons, decided to volunteer for the paratroopers and serve as company commander, out of a desire to be close to the fighters and to the activity. He performed this role for three consecutive cycles. At first he commanded a company of recruits in the Patan Battalion, where he was a high personal example and showed personal responsibility, professionalism and devotion. After his friend, who was a company commander, was killed, Uri took command and brought the company to the end of the route. In his last position he took command of the auxiliary company in the Viper Battalion. The company, which suffered losses and was in poor condition, underwent a radical change. Uri, who opposed the tradition and the procedures the company had grown up on, began rebuilding it in a different way. He managed to rehabilitate the company and lead it forward, crystallize it and turn it into a quality company. In interviews, his soldiers tell him how he donated two salaries to fund a club for soldiers. They learned to admire his integrity, devotion and aspiration to perfection, and respected him as pain. Uri was caring, attentive to his soldiers, giving them attention and taking care of their safety. Under his command, the company completed its missions at the level of an elite reconnaissance unit. At the end of November 1992 Uri began to serve in the regular army. In addition to his service in the paratroopers, Uri was preparing for a special anti-terrorism course in the United States, continuing his long course in the Shimshon unit. After the course, he was supposed to join the “OPEC” track, which is intended for outstanding officers, to go to military studies and return to a senior command post.As someone who grew up in a well-to-do family, Uri wanted to establish a large family of his own, On October 24, 1996 Uri went with his company to an ambush near the Lebanese town of ‘Aysheh and the area of the Brosh outpost in the eastern sector of the security zone, and one of the soldiers was on a barbed wire that caused a chain of explosive devices, Tom Karin, who led the force, were hit in the back and killed immediately. Another four soldiers were wounded, three of them seriously. Uri was laid to rest in the Kiryat Shmona military cemetery. He was twenty-five years old when he fell. Survived by his parents, five brothers – Ilan, Giora, Ronen, Eitan and Gadi and three sisters – Orly, Yael and Hadar. Uri was promoted to major after his death. Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai told him: “Uri is the son of Kiryat Shmona, and I remember the many years he served in the special units of the IDF, always in the dangerous places. “I have a son of four, when he grows up and will be a soldier, I want him to have a commander like Uri … During all my years in the army, I have not met anyone who plays He was thoughtful, devoted, listening and warm, but at the same time a rare professional, an extraordinary fighter, a combination that was hard to find … You were not a man of talk, you were a man Of the act and say about them, about the great men, who are people whose deeds are many of their statements, and you, Uri, were such a great man. ” In his letter of condolence to the bereaved family, Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak wrote: “Uri served as a company commander in the Viper battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade, and was described by his commanders as an officer with high command ability, who stood out as an example for those around him. “Uri was a special commander, but first of all he was a man and that’s how he treated his soldiers and acquaintances, first as people and only afterward as soldiers. Uri spent all his energy, youAll his time and finally sacrificed his life the way he believed. A perfect way of a perfect man, whom the soldiers and junior and senior commanders learned a lot from. In Uri’s room, the goal was to ‘lead, initiate, serve as a model and win.’ Indeed, that was Uri. He led in everything he did, trailing all of us with charisma, commanders and soldiers alike. He initiated on the operational and moral levels and served as an example and example in everything he did. Uri was an admired commander, a commander who created the highest standards in the battalion, nurtured a generation of continuity in the brigade, and all this in a special way, out of love and concern for everyone – soldiers, his family and friends. Uri Ezer Weizman: “I met Uri a year ago, and I have a lot of experience with him, In Nablus. I realized that he had not gone home for more than a month according to his decision. I immediately asked a senior officer to order him to leave, and demanded that they report to me. “Uri’s family received hundreds of letters after his fall, and many of the writers were people who did not know Uri in his life, but learned to admire him by reading articles about him. I salute Uri for leading a new way of ‘growing’ fighters: no more opacity, hardness of Lev and a “hard head.” What did you say? – “Soldiers will learn through the head and not through the legs” … despite the hardships in the way you persevered and raised exemplary soldiers. “” The man so modest, whose spiritual and physical power radiant from his lips both in speech and in his smile. … What a virtue Uri gave to everyone, and how without a voice shouted as commander and in the calmest, safest and simplest way, he swept all of them. “It made me feel that being a fighter, contributing to the state, the security of the people, giving of yourself in everything is the greatest satisfaction on earth.” “If I wanted to summarize the period of your stay in our company in the shortest way And exhaustive, and commit two words, saying: Wind storm! Why spirit? Wind, for as quickly as you came to us, so did you leave us suddenly. Why a storm? Storm, because only a very strong storm can in such a short period of time influence and impress its mark so significantly … “Uri’s family received a certificate of appreciation and respect from Major General Gideon Shafir, head of the IDF Personnel Directorate, Uri saw his service as a mission and carried it with devotion and love, always devoted and dedicated, to dedicate himself to increasing the strength of the IDF and to nurturing its spirit when the good of the state is in front of its eyes. “(This page is part of the Yizkor memorial project, )
