Azaria, Yossi (Yosef)
Yossi, son of Hannah and Isaac, was born on August 8, 1947, in Bombay, India, and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1949. He was loved by his friends and teachers at school. According to his teacher, a boy was full of joy and his hand was in everything. After graduating in sixth grade, he spent three years in Tel Yosef, where he studied automotive mechanics as an apprentice at the “Amal” vocational school and worked for two years at the Dan garage in Petah Tikva. When he was in elementary school, he was a member of the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed movement, and after returning from the kibbutz to his parents’ home, he was a counselor in the movement. Yossi was a sports enthusiast and devoted himself mainly to swimming, and during the summer he was a lifeguard in the Maccabi pool in Petah Tikva. He loved people and especially loved children, and with each person he found a common language. He was loved by his friends and teachers at school. After completing basic training and completing his tank course, he was appointed as a tank driver in an armored company in the Armored Corps and participated in the Six Day War as a tank driver in battles in Sinai. According to his commander, Yossi was a model of dedication and courage in the battle and was awarded a certificate of excellence for saving the life of his fellow soldiers with courage and resourcefulness, and in his discharge certificate, he was a soldier with good ability and a good fighter. He served as a tank driver in the Armored Corps, and was later transferred to the brigade headquarters In 1972, he married a soldier and set up a home in Israel, and when the Yom Kippur War broke out, Yossi joined his unit and fought with it in the battles of containment in the Golan Heights. On the 7th of Tishrei 5734 (7.10.1973), Yossi was hit and killed in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul, leaving behind a wife, parents, three brothers, and eight sisters. Promoted to Sergeant. His daughter was born after he fell, was named after him “Yosit”.
