Avraham, Nahum (Uri)

Avraham, Nahum (Uri)

Son of Miriam and Moshe, he was born in Kiryat Shmona in 1962. He completed his elementary studies at the “Yitzhak Hanasi” school in Kiryat Shmona, and then studied for two years electricity at the youth center in his hometown. Nachum was a happy and joyful young man, and despite his life in the shadow of the constant danger in his city, he was optimistic and calm, and felt a sense of security in his heart. He decided to study mechanics, and Nachum enlisted in the garage and devoted himself to his work. Nachum was drafted into the IDF in late October 1980. After basic training, he was sent to serve in the Ordnance Corps as a mechanic. He did not find his place in the unit and asked to take a driver’s course. His request was given to him, and he took a course and became the driver of the government officer in Tyre. During this period of service in Lebanon, he showed great responsibility, a desire to contribute to the war effort and stood out in his behavior and dedication. He tried not to worry his family and often telephoned home to announce his safety, but made sure not to tell about the hardships of life at his place of service. On the 25th of Cheshvan 5743 (11.11.1982), as a result of the explosion of a gas container in the military government building in Tyre, the building collapsed and buried its inhabitants. Among those killed was Nachum. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shmona. He left behind his parents, four brothers and two sisters. To commemorate his name, his family donated a Torah library to the Od Yosef Chai synagogue in Kiryat Shmona.
