Avni, Assaf (Assi)

Assaf, son of Atara and Nissim Avni, was born in 1973 in Be’er Sheva, and his family later moved to Rishon Letzion. At the end of November 1991, he enlisted in the IDF. At the end of his basic training, he began to serve as a recruits commander, but when his unit went to Lebanon, he asked to go with them to serve on the front lines “where the real activity takes place.” On the 2nd of Elul (19.8.1993), Assaf was killed when his force encountered an explosive device. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Rishon Letzion. After his death, Assaf was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
