Avigdor, Isaiah

Yeshayahu, son of Roza and Bitush Avigdor, was born in 1928 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He completed high school and aspired to immigrate to Palestine. In Bulgaria he joined a training group. In March 1948, he arrived in Israel on the “Atzma’ut” ship and was transferred to a Palmach training regiment in Beit Hashita, where he enlisted in the Navy for the landing battalion, which was under construction. On the night of July 17-18, the village of Beit Aafa was attacked, one company attacked from the south, but was repulsed. The Egyptian force in the village concentrated its efforts towards the navy company, and in view of this pressure and the failure of the attack in the southern sector, the company received an order to retreat. In this battle Yeshayahu fell, on the 11th of Tammuz 5708 (18.7.1948) and on the 9th of Tishrei 5710 (October 9, 1949), he was reinterred in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
