He was drafted into the IDF in May 1972 and volunteered to serve in the Paratroopers Brigade. After completing basic training, he joined a platoon of parachutists and served in the south of the country in the Sinai and north of the Golan Heights. He did not complain and always tried to beautify things and encourage his family. His commander described him as “a wonderful soldier, disciplined, quiet and humble.” Mordechai fought in the Yom Kippur War, during which he was shocked. However, after a few days in the hospital, he returned to the front and continued to fight bravely. When he returned home for a short vacation, he did not say much about the horror stories of his friends who fell alongside him in battle, but tried to encourage and reassure his parents. After the war he was transferred to the Golan Heights, where he took part in the War of Attrition. Mordecai used every opportunity to visit the house, telephoned his parents and friends frequently, and during his vacations he used every moment for fun, meetings and conversations with his friends from childhood. As his release date approached, Mordechai asked his parents to expand their homes and renovate them. He also took an active part in planning and building: “All this,” he explained, “in order to hold a grand and glorious liberation party.” 9.11.1974) Mordechai was killed in the military cemetery in Haifa and left behind his parents and two sisters, and his family donated a library and a parochet to the Ohel Yitzchak synagogue in the Carmel region.
