Auerbach, Chaim (Haimka)
Son of Sarah and Moshe, was born on 28.12.1928 in Jerusalem to a family of veteran workers and is the third generation in Israel. His childhood was spent in the streets. After completing his studies at the elementary school, he studied at the Max Payne vocational school. From an early age Haim was a member of the Hagana and Hanoar Haoved. After the UN General Assembly, he moved to active service in the Haganah, Tel Aviv, and afterwards to the Givati Brigade and participated in the battles of Kfar Uriah, Gezer and its surroundings, as well as Jaffa and its suburbs. As part of Operation Chametz to encircle Jaffa, a battalion of the Givati Brigade attacked Tel A-Rish (Tel Giborim today) near Holon on the 29th of April 1948 (April 29, 1948). The force conquered the mound and began to establish itself there. The enemy organized quickly and with the help of reinforcements from Jaffa carried out a counterattack. The force, which did not manage to organize itself, withdrew under pressure from the Arab attack, first to the southern slope of the mound and from there to Mikvah Yisrael and Holon. Haim was wounded in this battle and was carried on a friend’s back to Mikvah Israel. He died of an internal bloodbath at midnight on April 28, 1948, and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Rehovot.
