Assman, Karl (Rolf)


Son of Anna and Helmut, was born on 18.1.1927 in the city of Leipzig, Germany. At the age of six Hitler was in power, and on the eve of the outbreak of the war he was saved by the Youth Aliyah, which transferred him to relatives in England. In London he studied at the Gymnasium first and specialized in technique. When he was 17 he volunteered for the army and chose to serve in the Jewish Brigade, serving as a tank soldier. At the end of the war, he toured the defeated Germany, inquired and demanded to know the fate of his parents until he learned that they had been taken from their place of residence to Poland, to one of the death camps and perished in the Holocaust. At the end of his service he returned to London. He worked in his civilian profession until the War of Independence broke out in Israel and he decided to enlist and enlist. Carl traveled to France and received a visa to Israel – the country of his uncle’s residence – provided he did not join the fighters. He signed the commitment and violated it while he was still in Marseilles, joining the Haganah there. Karl arrived in Israel in the second half of May 1948, and only three days later joined the newly formed 8th Brigade, an armored brigade. He received special recognition from his commander, who praised his courage and ability to act. Karl was able to stay in Israel for only three weeks, for on Wednesday, June 11, 1948, he participated in the battle for the village of Ana, where he was sent with reinforcements, and his armored car was hit by a tank- In 1949, his only brother, who moved with him from Germany to London and spent most of his time together, immigrated to Israel and joined the ranks of the fighters.
