Asrey, Zion
Son of Kadya and Shlomo, was born on the 13th of Tevet 5623 (13.1.1923) in Tel Aviv. His parents, one of the first settlers of Nahliel, a moshav of Yemenite Jews near Hadera, and his father was one of the first guards in the vineyards of Hadera and the surrounding area. Zion studied Talmud Torah for Yemenites in Tel Aviv and was a diligent student who excelled in his studies. At the age of 12 his mother died and he was forced to bear the burden of supporting the family together with his father. Be kind and willing to suffer. Worked and found great satisfaction at work. He had a pleasant voice, and he sang a lot and delighted the others in his songs. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he joined the ranks of the first defenders of the “Kiryati” brigade. During the day he worked in construction work, and at night he stood guard in the Haganah. On the 27th of Shvat 5708 (February 7, 1948), after a hard day’s work, Zion was sent to the front post on the border between Jaffa and Tel Aviv, to protect and defend the city’s borders. There was a fierce battle over this key position. Zion and his comrades-in-law three times rebelled against Arab attacks. But in the morning he was hit by the enemy’s bullet and as he fell, he called out to his comrades in the post: “Friends, do not pay attention to me, do not leave the place, continue the fire with all the tools!” . He was laid to rest at the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery.
