Ashuri, Daniel-Hai (“Danny”, “Dariush”)

Daniel-Hai, son of Rahamim and Mashala Ashuri, was born on April 12, 1940 in the city of Kremencha, in Iran. The family immigrated to Israel in 1952 and settled in Jerusalem. Danny was drafted into the IDF in October 1958. On the first day of the Six-Day War, 26 Iyar, 5.6.1967, he took part in the decisive battles for the liberation of Jerusalem, and on the afternoon of that day he excelled in the conquest of Armon Hanatziv and the capture of the Jordanian Legion outpost in Tire. But during the liquidation of this post, Daniel, together with one of his comrades, rushed to rescue a soldier who had been wounded, and a number of Legion soldiers emerged from a hidden position and shot Daniel and his friend dead. Daniel was going to marry his wife two weeks later – and after a week he was about to receive a certified teacher’s diploma, but he did not get it. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
