Ashkenazi, Shmuel


Son of Rachel and Yitzhak, was born on 19.8.1921 in the city of Adirana (Adrianople), Turkey to a Zionist family. He was educated in a Hebrew high school but was forced to earn his living and study tailoring. During the Second World War Shmuel was drafted into the Turkish army, served there for five years and returned to his hometownand upon being released. In 1944 he arrived in Israel by train through Syria and joined the group that was about to settle in the hills of Jerusalem and first received training in Kvutzat Shiller. He was a tall man, brown and blue-eyed.Shmuel fought in the Harel Brigade and on the 2nd of Iyar, May 11, 1948, he fell in battle for the Shaar Hagai outposts during Operation Maccabi with a bullet wound in his mouth. Shmuel was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
