Ashkenazi, Dror

Son of Ovadia and Miriam. He was born on 28.12.1956 in Kibbutz Mesilot. He studied at the elementary school in his kibbutz and continued his studies at the Gilboa educational institution in Beit Alpha. “Dror was different from everyone else, and the usual frameworks did not suit him: His interests were far from any school system, and Dror was interested in music, painting and sculpture from an early age. “He said. “Art was his life,” says his teacher, Shula Ganz. “He tried to express his talents in everything – in ceramics, in metal, in painting and in the army, and his golden hands overcame everything.” “Dror played the piano, the accordion, the guitar, the cello, and the organ, and every instrument that touched him rose to life.” “It was hard for him to deal with himself because of his high demands and criticism, which made him feel dissatisfied, so he went from being a tool to an instrument and from dealing with the subject.” His musician friend Danny says: “He was at the beginning of his career, and his skills would lead him far away, and he had many plans before he decided where to turn, and it is natural for a young artist full of doubts.” When he was 18, Dror began to paint with oil paints and to compose songs. Two of his songs, which he wrote and composed, won first prizes at the Gilbozmer competition in 1972, a competition held at the Gilboa educational institution. One of them was even played on the radio. At the end of his studies, he began to work as a farmer in his farm, his father’s profession. He loved the work and the kibbutz very much and was loved and appreciated by those around him. Dror was a tall, thin, mustachioed boy, a quiet, modest fellow. His qualities and talents accompanied him and came to an appropriate revelation even during his military service. Dror was drafted into the IDF in November 1975 and volunteered for the Armored Corps after completing basic training, and was assigned to an armored unit in the Golan Heights: Dror was a soldier who used to do what his commanders commanded him , And seldom deviated from his habit and tried to convince his commanders that they were not right. In training, he worked hard to invest his full energy and strength, so he received a great deal of sympathy from his commanders. He helped his friends and thought not only of himself. When certain jobs were imposed upon him, he would carry them out immediately, as was the custom of a loyal and diligent kibbutznik. He found great interest in every field, and in the courses his grades were among the highest. Dror, in the eyes of his commanders, was considered a candidate with many chances for a tank commander course. “Dror did not forget his family and friends, and despite the hard training, he kept close contact with them. When you stay in the camp. When you look longingly at the distant house and try to see it, if not in reality, then at least in the imagination. Friday, when you go to sleep early with a small hope in my Lev, that maybe next week I will return to my favorite place – home “Dror wrote to his friend Rachel in one of his letters to her: On July 8, 1976, Dror fell in the Golan Heights Fulfilling his duties. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Mesilot. Survived by his parents and two sisters. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Dror was an alert, devoted and responsible soldier, and he was among his comrades and was recommended by his commanders to a tank commanders’ course, and he could become one of the pillars of the battalion” .
