Appelbaum, Moshe


Moshe, son of Liba and Yosef, was born on October 23, 1943, in Siberia, Russia, and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1948. In Israel, he attended elementary school “Maalot HaNevi’im” and “Amami Aleph” and later at “New High School”. He graduated from the Air Force Technical School. Moshe was a diligent student and excelled at studying the real professions. After graduating from elementary school with good grades, he received a scholarship to continue his studies. He was a member of the “Bnei Akiva” youth movement and later served as a youth counselor in the Haifa branch of the movement. Moshe was optimistic, smiling and happy. He was devoted and loyal to his family and worked hard to help the household economy by providing tutoring. Among the many friends he had acquired, he was known as someone who was always ready to help others with good advice, words of encouragement and actual deeds.
Moshe was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in February 1962. After completing basic training, he was assigned to an air-force unit and was assigned to an air force base, he was a good soldier who was very disciplined and devoted to his army duties. That he filled with joy and pride all his duties. Moshe tried very hard not to worry his parents, much to visit the house and during vacations he also helped his parents as much as he could. In June 1965, Moshe completed his mandatory service and began to work as a clerk. He became friends with many people at his place of work in the Israeli trade organization and was soon known in the merchants’ organization in the Haifa area. In 1966 he married Nurit, his girlfriend from the time of his army service, and within a year he had two twin daughters. His devotion and love for his daughters and his wife knew no bounds. Moshe devoted a great deal of time to his daughters, participated in their games, and helped them with homework, as long as he had time. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he was drafted into active duty and was apprehended as a paramedic to one of the Armored Corps units. He participated in the battles against the Syrians in the Golan Heights and in one of the battles, on October 15, 1973, when a shell exploded near him and was killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the Haifa cemetery. He left behind a wife, two daughters, parents, brothers and sisters. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Moshe was a devoted soldier and a model friend. He was loved by everyone he knew. his soul is holy that we will cherish in our hearts with pride
