Amon, Yusuf

Son of Naif and Aafia. Yusuf was born on 1 July 1940 in the village of Yirka, a member of the Druze community. He attended elementary school in his village until the fifth grade. After being drafted into the IDF in May 1961 Yusuf served in a reconnaissance unit, and during the service he underwent a course for squad commanders. Upon his release he joined the Border Police, where he served faithfully and devotedly. Yusuf always cared for his parents. He was courteous and polite in his manner with the people of his village. Yusuf’s home and Lev were open to anyone in need, and he was prepared to give his own to the patient as well, as evidenced by the blood donation to one of his friends. On the first day of the battles in the Six-Day War, June 5, 1967, a policeman, Yusef, fell during an assault on the outpost at Umm Kataf in Sinai. He was twenty-seven when he fell. He was brought to rest in the cemetery in the village of Yirka. He left a wife and three small children. On his open grave Yusuf’s commander said that his name had been added to the list of Israeli heroes who paid with their blood for the sake of peace. Shiekh Jaber Muadi, the Druze representative in the Knesset, said at the funeral: “No enemy action will deter the Druze, and we will always see ourselves as an inseparable part of this common state … Yusuf did his job: He defended our lives and our honor in the country. So his name will never be forgotten. ” Yusuf’s memory was elevated in the “Hand for the Fallen” published by his company and the “Brigade in the Six Day War”. In the Nahal Brigade in the campaign, several pages were dedicated to him, and in Musa Halabi’s book, “Blood Alliance,” Yusuf’s name was commemorated.
