Amitai, Mordechai (Motke)


Son of Bella and Yitzhak, was born in December 1914 in Dombrowice, Poland, and immigrated to Israel in 1933 on the ship “Volos.” Until 1941 he was a member of Kibbutz Maanit and later worked for a year near the Dead Sea. From the day he arrived in Israel Mordechai was a member of the Haganah. From 1936 to 1939 he served as a guard in Karkur and at the end of 1947 organized the “Civil Guard” in Bnei Brak, where he lived, on behalf of the Haganah. With the declaration of the establishment of the state on May 15, 1948, Mordechai joined the campaign and served in the Alexandroni Brigade. On the day of 26 Iyar 5708 (June 4, 1948), he fell during a bombardment while driving a vehicle that transferred weapons to the fighters in the Battle of Kakun. On the 28th of Iyar 5708 (June 6, 1948), he was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
