He won the first place in the Amitzur Shapira running competition in 1971, the first place in the 1,500 field race in the regional competition, and he achieved many other races and competitions before serving as a teacher, deputy in the agricultural school in Ein Kerem, and as a guide At the Carmit Institute in Jerusalem, David developed a special hobby: collecting snakes, he was very interested in nature and studied it diligently, David was drafted into the IDF in February 1976 and volunteered, as the family tradition, to the paratroopers. During basic training he was wounded and lay for two months in a hospital. When he recovered he was released from the army, but he insisted that he should not leave the army despite his injuries and returned to serve in the paratroopers. To maintain his physical fitness he used to go out, even after training, to run. On Wednesday, May 10, 1977, David fell in the line of duty when he was 20, when a helicopter crashed in the Jordan Valley. In this disaster, 54 soldiers were killed. David was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He left behind a mother, brothers and sisters. One of his young pupils at the Carmit Institute in Jerusalem wrote to his parents: “David was my uncle, and more than that, I saw him as a friend despite the difference in age between us. There was a lot to learn from David. He always said, ‘When you grow up, Jacob, I will teach you to catch snakes.’ Once David came riding a horse. He wanted to ride with me, but Mama would not. I always took pride in my friends. I loved him and will always remember him in his Lev. “His family published a booklet in his memory and donated books to the Beit Rachel and Ahl Pinchas synagogues in Jerusalem.
