Alterman, Semyon


Son of Raisa and Ziss, was born on December 19, 1962, in Kishinev, Russia. He completed his elementary studies in his hometown and at the end of 1976, when he was about fourteen years old, immigrated with his parents to Israel and the family set up their home in Yokneam Illit. Shimon was admitted to the high school in Zichron Yaakov, where he studied for a year and a half. He decided that he wanted to study car mechanics, and therefore went to study at the “Urim” school in Kiryat Tivon, where he completed a course of several months. Afterward, Semyon decided to go out to work, to earn a living and not to burden his parents. He began working as a machine operator at the Osem factory in Yokne’am. After a few months he went to work in a metal shop in the Haifa Bay and after a few months went to work in Shikma in Haifa until he was drafted into the IDF. He was an outstanding athlete, and in his youth Semyon participated in various sports competitions in Russia. He was drafted into the IDF in early 1980 and assigned to serve in the Artillery Corps. After basic training he was sent to a professional course in the framework of the IAF, and was assigned to one of the IAF units. He was a good soldier, always trying to do his job. He was also a good friend, loved to help others in deed and advice. His friends liked him and he was accepted by people both in the army and in civilian life. During his service, Semyon sought to improve his knowledge of Hebrew and was sent to the course, where he studied, advanced, and achieved good achievements. On 5 Adar 5743 (18 February 1983) Semyon fell in the line of duty and was brought to eternal rest in the Yokneam cemetery, leaving behind his parents and sister.
