Alon, Meidad

Meidad was born in Haifa on 5.1.1962 to Miriam and Moshe. He studied at the Reali School from grades 1 through 12. His father, a veteran sailor, who wanted Meidad to join the navy and continue the legacy, but was forced to accept Meidad’s desire to join Shion Brigade. Meidad believed that the war was necessary so that even in the north of the country it would be possible to live without Katyushas. On the second day of the Peace for Galilee War, the armored personnel carrier in which Meidad was traveling was hit, and three of his friends were killed (Erez Futterman, Giora Ron and Moti Dahan) and one was wounded. Meidad did not speak or rest, but made visits to his wounded friend and the bereaved families of his three friends. Upon his return to Lebanon he was not satisfied and expressed his views and dislike of the war in letters and in every possible way, including one published after his death in the newspaper “Haaretz” of 20.8.1982. On the night of July 25, 1982, as a result of a poor briefing, Oded Zira, Pinchas Cohen and Meidad were killed. Meidad left poems, sketches, and paintings from different periods of his life. Meidad was killed at the age of twenty years and seven months, and he was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. Meidad remains engraved in the hearts of his parents Moshe and Miriam, his sister Michal and his brother Maoz.
