Alcaref, Yaakov


Son of Hanna and Yehuda, was born in 1923 in the city of Meknes, Morocco. He studied at the Talmud Torah and at a young age began to work as a framer to help his poor family. In 1946, when he was already married and the father of four children, he moved with his family to Algeria, and immigrated to Israel on the ship “Shivat Tzion” which was captured by the British and sent to Cyprus. In early February 1948 he immigrated to Israel, joined the Haganah immediately and served in the “Kiryati” brigade. On the eve of the end of the battle on Jaffa, he embarked on a sabotage operation on the border of Tel Aviv-Jaffa where he fell, on 22 Nisan (1.5.1.1948). Yaakov was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak. His brother Gabriel fell eight months later.
