Agmon, Yaakov


Yaakov, son of Olga and David, was born on June 5, 1950, in Aleppo, Syria, where he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1953 through Turkey, where he lived in Israel. Yaakov grew up and was educated in Jerusalem at the Moriah elementary school and continued his studies at the Brandeis High School with a fine mechanics track. He was a diligent pupil. Yankele was also a devoted and loyal son, who considered him a pleasant privilege. He was deeply attached to his family. Yaakov was drafted into the IDF in early May 1969. At first he received the protection of his older brother when he was sent to undergo basic training in the Beit El camp, where his brother was a platoon commander. But in the middle of basic training he was transferred to the Armored Corps and finished there. After basic training, he completed a course in the Armored Corps and completed it successfully. He stood out as an excellent soldier and a great man. Every role assigned to him was fulfilled in its entirety and in its precise and responsible manner. His commanders were impressed by his professional abilities and were not afraid to assign him important positions. After a relatively short period, he was sent by his commanders to a course for squad commanders. He completed the course with great success and this role was fulfilled efficiently and responsibly. After an additional period of service, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He spent the War of Attrition on the southern front. He also began to write songs and left a large collection of poetry. After his discharge, he returned to his family and began working with his brother in a diamond polishing factory where his brother was a foreman. He joined the factory as the polished diamond miner and later moved to the Export Department and worked on preparing the diamonds for export shipments abroad. About a month before the Yom Kippur War he went on a trip to Europe. During the Yom Kippur War, Yaakov participated in the battles of containment and break-up at the Sinai front. On the 28th of Tishrei 5734 (24.10.1973), during the break-in to the city of Suez, an Egyptian sniper shot him and he was killed. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. Survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
