Adler, Zvi (“Hershey”)

Zvi, son of Aharon and Tzirel Adler, was born on 24 August 1924 in the city of Nitra, Czechoslovakia, growing up in a religious atmosphere. He studied at Yeshivat Pishtani and Nitra. Of the entire family, his two sisters remained after the killing in Auschwitz. In 1949 he immigrated to Israel and he devoted all his spare time to studying the Talmud and even at night in the Torah. He was humble in his manner and disciplined in his actions and in every position imposed on him he saw a holy duty which he performed with understanding and will. He was drafted into the IDF in August 1950. During the most difficult days of his service, he maintained his religion and tradition, during which he was a cook in his unit and served as a model for his comrades in all his ways and deeds. On 26 Tamuz, 9.7.1953, Zvi fell in the line of duty and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Givat Shaul in Jerusalem. His wife was pregnant and her daughter was born seven months after he fell.
