Adler, Yosef (Justin)
Yosef, son of Matilde and Shlomo-Ludwig Adler, was born on the 5th of Tammuz 5623 (July 5, 1923) in the city of Orshfringen, Germany. In his youth, he joined a Zionist youth movement and with its members immigrated to Palestine in late 1940. Upon arrival in Palestine they were imprisoned by the British in the Atlit detention camp. When they were released from the camp they were sent as a “youth company” to Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov in the Jordan Valley. In the course of World War II, the members of the group including Yosef decided to join the Palmach as a cohesive hachshara, and later established the “Eyal” nucleus. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, Yosef fought in the Palmach’s second battalion and participated in many battles. On the 28th of Adar II 5708 (April 8, 1948), Yosef fell in the second battle in the area of the Castel during Operation Nachshon, whose goal was to break through the besieged Jerusalem. He was buried in a graveyard in the cemetery in Ma’aleh Hachamisha. In 1953 the victims of the battle were laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
