Adato, Shlomo

Adato, Shlomo

Born in Adirana (Adrianople), Turkey. He saw no point in continuing the exile life and requested that his parents allow him to immigrate to Israel. When the pressure on the Turkish Jews grew, the resistance of his parents lessened and they allowed him to immigrate. Shlomo joined the “Youth Aliya” convoy and in early 1943 arrived in Israel by train via Antalya and Syria. His parents came to the State of Israel, but he did not see them. Two days after the establishment of the state, when it was necessary to hand over the place to the Arab Legion, Shlomo volunteered to participate in dropping explosives into the Jordan. He was seriously injured in an explosion on the evening of May 17, 1948. The next day Shlomo was flown to Tel Aviv and died of his wounds on the 12th of Iyar 5708 (21.5.1948). He was laid to eternal rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery.
