Ackerman, Amnon

Son of Ida and Yitzhak, was born on 29.6.1929 in Haifa. He completed six years of study at the Reali School in Haifa and continued his studies at the Technion’s two-year vocational school. Amnon had musical talent and studied music systematically. From his aspiration to kibbutz life, he postponed his studies in music and devoted himself to training. He also had a talent for painting and during his last period of life began to study in it. At the age of 11, he joined the Scout movement and after a few years joined a training nucleus. He took part in the aliyah to Biriya and for a while afterwards went out with his friends who were looking for training in Dafna. During the training period, despite his fatigue from hard work, he studied and prepared for the matriculation exam. But the sense of duty toward the homeland preceded him for all. With the outbreak of the War of Independence he enlisted immediately and served in the “Yiftach” Brigade. He participated in various battles in the Galilee. He was also among the convoys. In his last letter, he expressed his regret over his absence for the second time from the Passover seder at home, and concluded: “We will open the way and then we will come for a vacation.” Amnon fell in the second attack on the mountain police fortress in Nabi Yosha, on the 20th of Nissan 5708 (April 20, 1948). The second attack on the Nabi Yosha police took place on the night of 19-20 April 1948. The saboteurs broke through the fences, approached the building and began to place the explosives. In the process, grenades were thrown at them, causing casualties. The evacuation of the casualties delayed the explosion, and in the meantime, additional fighters were injured, including the terrorists and the bomb was not activated. At dawn, orders were given to withdraw. The withdrawal was carried out with the combat of considerable enemy forces summoned to the scene and there were many casualties. On the 11th of Iyar 5708 (May 20, 1948), Amnon was brought to rest in Nebi Yusha.
