Abramowitz, Kalman


Son of-Ethel and Isaac. He was born in Russia and when he was about three to four years old, he immigrated with his family to Eretz Israel. The family settled in Tel Aviv and here Kalman discovered his two great loves: sports and the sea. He took part in the boxing and swimming industries, spent a lot of time on the seashore and befriended the veteran rescuers of Tel Aviv, such as Emil and Yoske. Kalman was a cheerful young man who loved a life he loved to dance. At an early age, he joined the “Zevulun” Yordei Yam association and became a sea man. He joined the Lloyd Land of Israel and became a sailor on the ship “Har Zion”, which sailed along the lines between the ports of Palestine and Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, the Black Sea and even Antwerp. With the outbreak of World War II, the ship joined the British military effort to maintain open waterways in the days and was part of the convoy that carried equipment and soldiers both in the Mediterranean and in the oceans from Britain to it. On August 18, 1940, the ship “Mount Zion” was torpedoed by a German submarine, on its way between the United States and Great Britain, and drowning as it brought down 33 of its 34 crew members, Kalman among them. He left three brothers and three sisters. His family received a certificate of honor and honor from the British government. On the rafters of the ship “Mount Zion” and the circumstances of its sinking was published in the book “The conquerors at sea Netiva”. The memorial service for the fallen is published in the weekly World Zionist Organization “Ha’olam”.
