Abramowitz, Avraham

Son of Shoshana and Shmuel. He was born on 13.3.1922 in Rosh Pina. His father immigrated from Romania in 1870 and was one of the first agricultural workers in Zichron Ya’akov. He settled in Rosh Pinna and set up his farm there. Abraham was orphaned from his mother when he was one year old. After completing his studies at the elementary school in Rosh Pina, and since his father was also orphaned, he moved to an orphanage in Jerusalem. The boy found it difficult to adapt to the city and to the regime in the institution, as he loved the mountains of Galilee, the expanses and the freedom. He worked in a workshop for carpentry and metalworkers, learned the profession, and later worked as an assistant truck driver who brought milk from the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem. Everyone recognized the boy’s diligence, keenly aware of his alertness and quick perception. He was particularly interested in auto mechanics and wanted to take a test and get a driver’s license. During the 1936-1939 riots he joined the ranks of the Haganah and traveled every day from Tiberias to Jerusalem despite the danger of the roads. On the 16th of Adar (March 26, 1940) they ambushed a truck of Arab rioters and on the way between Nablus and Jenin was murdered at night. He was brought to rest at the Rosh Pina cemetery. He laid a mother and a sister. Articles in his memory were published in Davar and Haaretz.
