Abhar, Amnon (Sapir)

Amnon (Sapir), son of Simcha and Abraham Abhar, was born on the 16th of Shvat, 14.2.1930 in Tel Aviv. He worked in the printing trade. His charming smile, kindness, loyalty, respect for all his courage, made him beloved by all. Amnon was passionate about the homeland and the people. In May 1948, he enlisted in the IDF and served in one of the armored corps battalions 8. At first he was a Fiat fighter and later, after completing a wireless course, became a radio operator in a half-track combat vehicle. Armed with confidence and faith, he went to every battle. Amnon was about to receive a vacation, but he voluntarily gave it up and also gave up the possibility of being discharged from the army, preferring to join the ranks of the regiment’s motorized regiment battalion (the “Kommando” battalion), with whom he fought in Operation Kane, Taibe, Lod and Ramleh. On 7 Cheshvan, November 9, 1948, he took part in an attack to capture the Iraqi-Suweidan Police (“Yoav Fortress” today). Before overtaking the fortress, he went up on a hill overlooking the liberated area, and signaled to his men to advance toward the Iraqi-Suweidan Village, but at the very moment of their receiving his message, the half-track in which he was traveling was hit by an enemy shell and his life was cut off prematurely. He was 18 when he fell. Amnon was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kfar Warburg.
