Zohar, Mordechai

Zohar, Mordechai

Son of Sarah and Moshe Aryeh Saur. He was born in 1899 in Lodz, Poland to a Zionist and observant family. In 1912 he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and settled in Rehovot and joined the “Hashomer” association. For a while he worked as an agricultural laborer in the Galilee and afterward he was a guard in the streets. In Av 5707 (1917) he was shot and killed by Arabs, apparently defectors from the Turkish army, while guarding the almond groves of Rehovot, east of the settlement, on the border of Ramle. His bones were transferred to the tombs of the guards in Tel Hai, his name was immortalized in the books “Rehovot”, “Ruach VeHahel” and “Yizkor” by Ya’ari-Polskin.
