Zimmerman, Yaakov (Yankele)
Son of Nehama and Kalman was born on 15.1.1929 in the Montefiore neighborhood of Tel Aviv, where he completed his studies at the Ahad Ha’am School of Boys, excelled in a good memory and a clear reading, and was privileged to attend the Torah in the synagogue. Before graduating from the elementary school, he studied the art of retouching and quickly specialized in it, but because of the lack of work that prevailed in the metal industry, he started To work as an accountant in an ice factory, and at the outbreak of the War of Independence he enlisted and was sent to a course for commanders in Sharona. After completing a sniper instructor course, he was attached to the Givati Brigade and served as a brigade sergeant in one of the battalions. He participated in the defense of Negba and as a company commander participated in the operation “Nachshon”, in the activities of Hatah and Keretia. With the opening of the “Yoav” operation to break through the Negev, his company was forced to occupy the Khirbet Masara outpost, east of Iraq, in order to block the road to Beit Jubrin and prevent the arrival of enemy reinforcements. The outpost was conquered without casualties, but after its capture, on October 18, 1948, the Egyptians began to bombard the outpost. In this shelling, Yaakov fell and two other members of his unit were wounded. He was laid to rest at the Warburg military cemetery. The outpost that Yaakov Zimmerman fell into is named after the “Jacob outpost”.
