Zafran, Michael (“Mickey”)
The only son of David and Shifra. He was born in Lvov, Russia, on February 8, 1946. At the age of seven he began to study in an elementary school, but in the middle of the fifth grade he moved with his parents to Poland, where he lived for almost three years. In 1960, he immigrated to Israel with his parents and completed his elementary studies at Nof Yam, and then began studying at the Alliance high school in Ramat Aviv, although Michael studied in three countries and excelled in his studies everywhere. He also played chess at leisure and on piano, and in June 1965, after graduating from high school, he was drafted into the IDF. During the course of his service, he completed a course for a lieutenant colonel, an officers’ course, and finally an artillery officer, and as one of the outstanding cadets he remained as a guide in the next course of the artillery officers. Although he was able to continue his work as a guide, in three incidents he participated there and on the 27th of Elul 5727 (27.9.1967) Michael fell in a battle in the canal area during the shelling of the enemy and was laid to rest in the Kiryat Shaul military cemetery.
