Yitzhak (Itzik) Matalon


Son of Palomba (Zippora) and Aharon, was born on the 13th of Av, July 27, 1912 in the city of Salonika, Greece and in 1930 immigrated to Israel as a member of Maccabi Greece and as a participant in the first Maccabiah. Thanks to his efforts, the rest of his family followed him. In 1935 Yitzhak joined the Haganah. He participated in the preservation of Tel Aviv’s borders during the 1936-1939 riots. Itzik was devoted to his role and pleasant with his friends. At the beginning of the War of Independence, in December 1947, he participated in the defense of the city and was at the position of the “Helazon” factory in the Abu Kabir area, one of the most difficult in the defensive positions of Tel Aviv. On 22.5.1948 he enlisted in the “Kiryati” Brigade, after a long and loyal service in the Haganah underground. While he was in the shelter during an air strike, he was wounded and died of blood loss at the hospital on the 27th of Sivan 5708 (4.7.1948). He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak. Yitzhak left behind a wife and a child of three and a half.
