Yitzhak Barashi


Yitzhak, son of Husna and Yehuda, was born on January 18, 1942, in Jerusalem, where he studied at the Alliance high school and at the Carmia High School in Jerusalem. He is a member of the Scouts movement and the YMCA club in Jerusalem.Although he was an enthusiastic sports fan, he would read a lot and had a large collection of books. As a person, Yitzhak was pleasant and well-disposed. He was optimistic and always willing to help others. He was therefore fond of his friends, who nicknamed him “Itzik”. He was loyal and devoted to his parents, cared for his family and did his best to ease the burden of work on the family, in managing and performing earthworks and roads. Yitzhak was drafted into the IDF in August 1961 and volunteered for the Armored Corps, and after completing basic training for tank commanders, he was assigned to the Armored Corps and was awarded the rank of sergeant. He was an excellent soldier, disciplined and loyal and a dear friend and devoted to his comrades-in-arms whom everyone loved. He fought in the Six-Day War and was with the first tanks that reached the Suez Canal. Therefore, he was awarded the “Six-Day War”. In the Yom Kippur War, Yitzhak participated in the battle against the Syrians in the Golan Heights. In a battle that took place on October 9, 1973, in the Tel Fares area, his tank was hit and he was killed. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. He left behind a pregnant wife, a son, parents, brothers, and sisters. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant. Six months later he had a daughter. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “You lost a beloved family member, and his comrades in the unit lost a dear and devoted friend. “His widow and children donated to his memory a curtain and embroidery for the Holy Ark in a synagogue in Jerusalem, his mother, his brothers, and sisters contributed to him and established a library in the Rene Cassin School in Jerusalem where Yitzhak graduated from high school, they also donated a marble ark for the Torah and a chandelier in the “Porat Yosef” synagogue in Katamon – a place where Yitzchak used to pray.
