Wirtzer, Yisrael-Yitzhak

Yisrael-Yitzhak, son of Gittel-Hinda and Avraham-Jacob Wirtzer, was born on 10.1.1910 in Warsaw, Poland. He studied in a cheder and learned the Talmud. In 1924 he immigrated to Eretz Israel with his parents. When it was his turn to enlist in the IDF, and although his vision was poor and his leg and right arm were injured in a traffic accident, the IDF committee ruled he was capable of combat service. In Operation “Danny” our forces took control of the Modi’in area and when the second truce came into force, the area was seized. On September 24, 1948, local Arabs attacked the outpost with the assistance of the Legion, in violation of the truce. The defenders of the outpost were surprised and were forced to retreat and many were injured in the retreat. The next day, our forces attacked and conquered the outpost. Yisrael-Yitzhak participated in this battle and fell there, on the 20th of Elul, 25.9.1948. Yisrael-Yitzhak was brought to rest at the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery, leaving a wife and two children (the second was born after his death).
