Wertheimer Ben-Zion


Ben-Zion Wertheimer was born in the Land of Israel to a family from the Old Yishuv in Jerusalem. During the First World War he was among the refugees from Eretz Israel who had arrived in Alexandria, Egypt, where he volunteered for the detachment battalion. During one of the difficult battles in Gallipoli, Ben-Zion volunteered to lead mules loaded with weapons for digging under enemy fire. He was seriously wounded and transferred to Alexandria, where he died of his wounds on 30 Av, 10.8.1915. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery No. 3 in the Shatby district of Alexandria.
