Weiner, Ariel

Ariel, son of-Hassia and Israel, was born on January 19, 1950 in Jerusalem, Ariel was drafted into the IDF in early February 1968. Although he successfully passed the entrance exams to the Faculty of Medicine, he was able to join the academic reserve, but he refused and wanted to fulfill his duty to the IDF. He asked to volunteer for the IAF, but was assigned to the armored corps. After completing his basic training, he completed a course in the Patton tank course, a course for tank commanders, a course for officers and a course for armored personnel officers. At the Armored Corps School he was an artillery instructor and for several months he was a regular army officer. He was a responsible and excellent officer, dedicated to his job and adhering to the tasks assigned to him. His commander testified that he was “ready to go out on any mission, even if this involved great danger, devoted and worried about his soldiers and was admired by his commanders and subordinates.” After being released from regular service, he was often called for periods of reserve service. At the Hebrew University of Jerusalem he studied at the Faculty of Chemistry and was an outstanding student, but when the problems of society and agriculture began to preoccupy him, he turned to economics. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Lieutenant Ariel was conscripted and sent as commander of a tank unit to the Sinai front to participate in the battles of containment and incursion against the Egyptians. In the battle that took place on the 24th of Tishrei 5740 (20.10.1973), in the “Misori” compound near the “Chinese farm”, Ariel’s tank was hit directly and he was killed on the spot. He was laid to rest at the Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem. Survived by father, mother, brother and sister.
