Vardi, Menachem

Menachem, son of Yehudit and Alexander, was born on the 11th of June 1939 in Petach Tikvah. His parents, members of the “Hachagim” group of the Mahanot Ha’olim movement, were in Raanana at the time before they set out to establish Kibbutz Maoz-Haim. Menachem attended elementary school and later in high school, in the following classes, at Kibbutz Maoz-Haim. In the person of Menahem, the love of the land, connected to her with all his soul, the love of man, and the love of his family and friends to Kibbutz Maoz-Haim, which he served faithfully and dedicated to him all his energies and energies, Menahem’s life is full of social and cultural activities, whose motives were concern for the community and for the benefit of the agriculture, the people and the state. This characteristic stood out in him when he was a student in the sixth and seventh grades. He was then sent to serve as a counselor in Bet She’an on behalf of the Hanoar Haoved movement. He organized a group of children and worked with them in educational work that made them Simcha and Simcha for three years. To this day, they remember the “best” guide they had ever had. Yes, we find in the letter of Menahem, the 11 year old, to his grandfather in the United States: “As I think about this, I will not understand why you do not separate from those living in the United States and come to live with your family in Israel, Only one thing: to pack the little that remains, to throw away the outside brilliance of a large one in the krayot and to come under our shade, to your son and his family. Here, I am sure you will find peace and tranquility. “Menahem was drafted into the IDF in mid-August 1957 and volunteered to serve in the paratroopers. After basic training he completed a parachuting course, a course for squad commanders and after a period of service he completed a course for infantry officers at the IDF Officers School. After completing the course he served as a guide at the officers’ school. At the end of March 1960, Menahem was discharged from regular service and assigned to a reserve infantry unit, as commander of the sabotage department. At the beginning of 1967 he was assigned to a reconnaissance company of the Armored Corps and during the Six-Day War he commanded a team in the reconnaissance company, which participated in battles in Emek Dotan. After the war he completed a course for advanced patrol officers and was appointed commander of a reconnaissance unit in a tank brigade. In this capacity he was promoted to captain. While serving in reserve duty, he took part in a course for company commanders in the Armored Corps and advanced armored officers’ course, and in August 1973 was promoted to the rank of major. Menahem began social and public activities immediately after he was discharged from regular service in the IDF when he was sent to coordinate the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed youth movement in Ramat Gan and was a member of the movement’s national secretariat. He worked in the local orchard, even though he was a veteran employee of the kibbutz, and at the same time he coordinated the activities of the company committee and was a member of the kibbutz secretariat, and he did not abandon his activity as a guide and led the trips in the Judean Desert and the Negev In 1966 he was elected secretary of the kibbutz and became the youngest secretary in the history of Maoz He worked for two years in this position, and later worked in the field of fish and landscaping, and was responsible for improving the appearance of the agriculture and construction of shelters. Menachem was prepared to deal with new challenges, and therefore it was natural that he was willing to take up the role of production manager in the Polirez plastic products factory of the kibbutz. He was going to study in a course for production managers at the Ruppin Midrasha, but did not get it. He aspired to see the prosperity and development of the agriculture and was ready to take on any task, no matter how many difficulties it involved. He had the ability to organize, the ability to do things, and the mental readiness to devote the proper effort and the time needed to translate verbal decisions into practice. GodAnd he loved the work of the land and the agricultural enterprise and was thrilled and excited every time he looked at his work and surveyed the development of the agriculture. In April 1965 he married Bracha and together with her he saw with joy how his family grew up and they became parents of three sons – Amichai, Moshe and Yoram. His fierce love for the work of the land is expressed in his words: “The entire valley has turned yellow – the fields of wheat, the weeds and the thorns – only here and there pieces of alfalfa or cotton and water, and when the harsh days of hamsin arrive and the gray dust rises with every wind, If you ask about me, then I felt like a fish in the water, I enjoy work, interesting occupations are abundant, and in fact I do not lack anything. ” Menahem served long periods, far more than necessary, in the reserve service. He wanted to participate in all courses held by the Armored Corps, in order to improve his professional level and advance on the command scale. During the Yom Kippur War, his unit participated in the battle against the Syrians in the Golan Heights. On the 11th of Tishrei 5734 (11.10.1973), the unit was engaged in fierce battles to penetrate fortified armor and infantry reserves in the Khan-Arnabeh area beyond the Purple Line, where a group of wounded soldiers from the brigade were waiting to be evacuated to the rear Who was brought to rest in the cemetery in Maoz Haim, leaving behind a wife, three sons, two parents and two sisters, and the family of Maoz Hayim and his family published a book in his memory entitled ” Yaffa times “, which include chapters chapters of his life, things he wrote about his character.
