Tarter, Shlomo

Shlomo, son of Henia and Meshulam Tarter, was born in 1921 in Suceava, Bukovina, Romania. Even before the Nazis and their horrors flooded the area, he moved to Bucharest and the events of the time turned him into a Zionist. Shlomo was accepted to train in Bnei Akiva in Bucharest and in 1944, he immigrated to Israel and joined the “Mechora” group in Kfar Hasidim. Shlomo did not get to participate in the group’s rise because in the meantime he joined the army (like all members of the group, Shlomo was a member of the Haganah).
He was among the liberators of Haifa and the conquerors of the Galilee, and fought for the outposts of Kfar Yavetz. Shlomo was a pioneer and a soldier, who fulfilled his role with joy and precision. He was a gentle young man, contented himself with little and demanded the maximum. In his group he was responsible for the medical treatment and served in the army as a medic. Shlomo was killed on 10 Av, 15 August 1948 in the village of Yavetz by enemy fire while helping a wounded friend, and was buried in Tel Mond. On May 17, 1951, he was put to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
